Operation Graduation 2015: Mercedes Tikkun (DeKalb, Ill.)

Date: June 4, 2015

I’ve been with Ombudsman a little over two years, and I can finally say my time is here. I’m a high school graduate! It’s exciting because I never thought I’d ever get to say those words. Without the help of Ombudsman providing great teachers and room for me to come, I don’t know how or when I would have been done. I’m leaving Ombudsman with a smile of fulfillment and accomplishment now that I’ve achieved what I thought would never be possible.

It seems like a hard question when I’m asked what have I learned or gained. I thought about this question a lot. I honestly think the biggest thing I’ve learned is when I need help I need to ask. I held back a lot and finally when asking my problems got smaller and smaller. I am finally graduating and can go on knowing to ask for help when I need it.

Something I’ve learned with Ombudsman would be that with care and patience come success. While some days are hard, these teachers here make it worth the while, I’ve gotten through so much with the patience and care they provide.

Before coming to Ombudsman I was battling an eating disorder and depression. Life isn’t always easy but sometimes when you have fallen so much you get picked up, Ombudsman was my pick up. I was able to get through high school and graduate so now I’m able to focus on the eating disorder and my depression and move on to better my future. I’m very thankful for the staff and what Ombudsman has offered me.

Ombudsman gave me the options for when to come in, my parents made the decision to make sure I arrive at the first morning class. They want me to be successful, not sleep in, to keep moving and strive for a good future even if that meant the hour walk or bike ride every morning.

I have a lot of growth I still have yet to focus on. Aside from that I hope to be a patient care technician and continue to work on myself to be the best I can be as well as help others. Just like my high school journey it’s going to be hard but keeping people who care and are willing to help in my life I’ll get through it. Just like I did with high school!
