Operation Graduation 2013: Molly Bates (Athens, Ala.)
I am going to tell you the reason why I came to Ombudsman and many great reasons why I would suggest Ombudsman to others. I came to Ombudsman because I became pregnant with my daughter while I was in high school. I was put on bed rest about a week and a half before I had my daughter, then after my daughter was born; I was out of school for six weeks which made it extremely tough to catch up on my work when I was able to go back to school. Needless to say, my parents and I were terrified that I was not going to graduate on time.
When I finally got the opportunity to come to Ombudsman, it was like nothing else. I was a little scared at first because I would not have a teacher that would be there teaching me my work. But as the weeks went by things got easier, and the people became more and more friendly. While at Ombudsman I have made friends with many people, the teachers are also very friendly as well. I like that we get one on one attention from the teachers. While at East Limestone, we rarely ever got one on one attention from our teachers because we were all working on the same thing at the same time, which made it a little harder for our teachers to help us all individually.
If I would not have come to Ombudsman, I would still be at my regular school. There is a great chance that I would not have got the chance to graduate with my class because I would be behind in my work. There is an even greater chance that I may have even quit school and just got my GED. Therefore, I am so thankful for the opportunity that I had to be able to come here. Not only was coming to Ombudsman for my future, but also my daughters’ future. Without a high school diploma I may not have been able to support her because it is hard to even get a job, especially with our economy the way it is today.
Because of the Ombudsman program, I see myself going very far in the future. If I were asked by other students or parents what this program is like, I would tell them it is the best thing for anyone who needs help. No matter what you need help with, there is someone at Ombudsman that can help you. So whether you have had a kid, having trouble in school or just need one on one help, I would definitely recommend checking into this program. Ombudsman worked with me after I had my child, because around three months later I had postpartum depression and wound up in the hospital for five days. They understood my reason for not being at school.
Once again, I am so thankful for the opportunity that I have had by being able to come to Ombudsman. It has helped me in ways that East Limestone was not able to do. I am very thankful for the staff and all of their hard work and dedication that they put into helping us as students make something of us. I can honestly say if it were not for the teachers and everything they helped me with I would not be in the graduating class of 2013. I will never forget the Ombudsman program and what all it has taught me, because it has taught me that just because you are falling does not mean that you cannot pick yourself back up.
