Operation Graduation 2011 Essay: Amber Scroggins (DeKalb, Ill.)
My Ombudsman Experience Graduate Essay
My name is Amber Scroggins. I’m 18 years old and this is my second year here at Ombudsman. I graduate in three weeks and without Ombudsman, I would have never made it this far. At the high school, there were too many distractions; I never completely understood what was going on in my classes. Here at Ombudsman, I’m able to focus and get my work done quickly. I learn a lot more and if I don’t understand something, a teacher is always there to help me.
It’s been fun here, and when I leave, I’ll be taking a lot of memories with me. When I wake up every morning, I’m eager to go to school because it’s all I have right now. I need my education to make my daughter’s life better. Ombudsman has been a positive, productive learning environment for me.
When I first came to Ombudsman at the beginning of my junior year, I had a group of friends already in my session and I wasn’t always productive. I would waste time and skim through my programs just waiting for the time to pass. When they switched my session, I was angry at first because I wouldn’t have my friends in that session, but it made me focus on my work and spend my time getting lessons done.
I’ve changed so much since coming to Ombudsman. I didn’t know what I was going to do after high school until Ombudsman helped me with information on financial aid and had public speakers from colleges come in to talk to us. I plan on taking classes at a Kishwaukee College for a certificate in office systems, and then once I get a good job and save up money, I’m going back to school to enroll in a paralegal program.
Ombudsman has provided me with choices, opportunities, and academic achievement. I know that my parents are proud of me now that my grades and attendance have improved. I’m no longer getting in trouble and my life wholly revolves around my future. They know my goals and believe that I can accomplish them. The person that I am today is partially thanks to Ombudsman. I am so grateful for having the chance to come to Ombudsman.
