Ombudsman Alumni Story: Shawn Miller (Illinois)

On my way to Ombudsman’s Winter Quarterly Conference held in Atlanta, I met a young man who was headed to a conference in Atlanta as well.

After landing at the ATL airport and attempting to locate transportation to the hotel, this young man overheard me talking to several drivers saying, “I work for Ombudsman Educational Services.” As the drivers pointed me in the right direction, a young gentleman approached me and asked, “Are you with Ombudsman –the schools…?”  I replied, “yes” and  he said, “Ombudsman saved my life.” So the story begins…

On January 23 at approximately 9 p.m. I had the pleasure of meeting Shawn Miller, a former Ombudsman Illinois student. Shawn shared that he was a defiant teenager who did not follow the rules in the traditional school setting. After numerous infractions, Shawn was sent to Ombudsman by his school district.

Apprehensive at first, Shawn soon grew close to the staff and his classmates. Success followed almost immediately, and he regained self-confidence and a purpose in life.

After graduation, Shawn became employed by Comcast  as a Technician/Installer. After six years, Shawn was promoted to Supervisor of Technical Operations and was on his way to a Comcast employee conference when we met.
