Operation Graduation Essay: “The Teachers are Amazing” (Limestone, Ala.)

Date: June 5, 2014

I’ve been at West Limestone from K-12. There may be some good teachers there, but I didn’t feel like I was really learning anything. I went through a lot in the time that I was there. It made the distractions increase and the learning opportunities decrease. So I searched for an escape where I could move at my pace and actually learn.

My issues really started in the seventh grade when I was taken from my parents at the age of thirteen. I had to grow up and raise my brother and sister the best I could. Even though we had a house, my siblings still came to me for guidance. That went on until I was fifteen. When everything was said and done, we had a broken home and no real family. My junior year, my dad destroyed his wrist in a motorcycle wreck and was out of work for a few months. He then moved in with my mom and sister in Clements leaving me and my brother with my grandparents.

While all of this was occurring, I was also suffering the life of an average teenager in high school. I “fell in love” with a girl in the 8th grade. She ruined my high school life after we dated five times. She broke up with me on my birthday my junior summer, and she dated nearly all of my friends. She is now taking the only best friend I have left.

With all of this said, I am eighteen—turning eighteen May 31st—I live alone, and I’m graduating from Ombudsman in Athens, Alabama. I am working on getting a job and sustaining my car’s gas tank. With all the drama and losing nearly all of my friends, I felt I needed an alternative to succeed and to push for my future plans as the proud owner of a car body shop and a part time musician. I can plan nearly any instrument, and I love cars.

I would definitely recommend Ombudsman to anyone who has struggles in life, school, and home in order to pass that benchmark that is so much needed and deserved. The teachers are amazing and you actually learn because they care about your struggles and successes.

Sincerely,

Proud Graduate of Ombudsman

Shaw Ellison
