Operation Graduation 2015: Marty Sebrell (EdTrek, Holt, Mich.)

Date: April 23, 2015

My life before EdTrek was a difficult one; being in the high school was not for me. I have been deaf in my right ear since I was born. Therefore, I have always had to deal with that, and I’m very shy so that is another thing I struggle with. After three years at the high school, I was enrolled into Ombudsman EdTrek, and it has been amazing.

When I first entered EdTrek I was shy; I only knew one person and wasn’t interested in talking to anyone. It was difficult to ask for help with all of the students around me. Eventually, I started to adjust to being there. Soon students started coming to me and talking, and slowly I started getting to know them. I am now able to talk when I need help, and am not worried about it. EdTrek has helped me overcome my shyness.

During my time at the high school, it was difficult because of the fact that I’m deaf in my right ear. It was difficult to hear teachers. I couldn’t keep up with the lessons, and I was always behind. Because of that, bad grades resulted and eventually I wasn’t able to keep up. At EdTrek, I am able to work at my own pace and spend more time figuring out the lesson I’m working on, which is very helpful.

The smaller setting is also helpful; I get more help than I did at the high school. My lead teacher Mrs. Gaugier has explained math to me in a way I can now understand. She helps me set weekly goals and deadlines in order to graduate on time. I’m also very grateful to her for having enough confidence in me to write an outstanding letter of recommendation.

I wasn’t sure of what to expect for my future before coming to EdTrek. I didn’t don’t want to end up like my cousin; he never graduated. He got a GED and doesn’t have a job. Luckily, I got the opportunity to attend EdTrek, and now I know I’ll be able to graduate and go to college next year. EdTrek has provided me numerous opportunities that I wouldn’t have if I still went to the high school.

The best opportunity that I have gotten is I get to attend Lansing Community College next year. If I would have stayed at the high school, this opportunity would have never happened. I’m very grateful that I’ve had this opportunity. If it wasn’t made available to me, I would still be unsure of my future. Now, I’ve got a bright future ahead of me thanks to EdTrek.
