Student Profile: Vanessa Flores (Downers Grove, Ill.)

Date: April 12, 2013

Vanessa is a senior from District 88.

OES: This is your second year with us. How does this year compare with last year?

VF: Now that I know what to expect I’m finishing my work faster.

OES: Can you compare what you are doing here to the work at your district school?

VF: The work here is challenging. I would feel overwhelmed in a normal class. Here I can work at my own pace. It was hard getting ready for a new subject when I was changing classes. This is better for me.

OES: What has your biggest challenge been?

VF: Algebra II. Mr.Sepke breaks it down into smaller pieces. Now it’s easier because I’ve seen it before. I need his help less often.

OES: Do you have a favorite subject?

VF: English. So far this year I’ve read “Hamlet” and “Jane Eyre.”

OES: Do you have plans for after high school?

VF: I’m going to go to COD to study zoology. I want to work with animals. I’m not sure what I’ll do exactly. It could be anything from a zoo to a vet’s office.

OES: How does your mom feel about your being with us?

VF: She knows I do better here. I was overwhelmed with homework.

OES: What do you miss about Willowbrook?

VF: I miss being with my friends at lunch. But I get to see them after school.

OES: If you knew someone who was going to join us, what would you tell them about our program?

VF: Don’t judge a book by its cover. You never know, you might like the system. You get one on one help from the teachers and the day is only three hours long.
