Savannah Ombudsman Accelerated Middle School Student Timmia Smart

We love hearing from our students and want to share comments we received during recent conversations with Timmia Smart from Savannah Ombudsman Accelerated Middle School.

OES: What brought you to OES?

TS: Last year my district school principal suggested I look at the Ombudsman program as a way to get caught up on my credits.

OES: Many students come to us not knowing what to expect. Is the program different from what you expected?

TS: Yes. The environment is more peaceful so I have less distractions and I am able to concentrate better. All the students work hard so we don’t have time for any drama or bad behavior. We all just want to get our work done.

OES: Any other differences?

TS: The teaching style is better for me. Because the classes are smaller the teachers are able to give us more one-on-one attention. The structure of the class allows me to take my time, which is something I really needed.

OES: What is your favorite subject?

TS: English. I actually think reading is fun.

OES: If you love to read, what is your favorite book?

TS: The Harry Potter series is definitely my favorite.

OES: Do you feel like you have changed since you’ve been here?

TS: Definitely. I am calmer and more in control of my actions. I can handle situations better than before.

OES: What would you tell one of your peers who is struggling in school about OES?

TS: I would tell them that Ombudsman is helping me to succeed and earn good grades. Students are probably nervous about going to a new school but it has actually been really cool not to know anyone. I don’t have the same distractions and I have really enjoyed meeting new friends.

OES: What do your parents think about your progress?

TS: They like seeing my good grades and they think I have matured.

OES: What do you hope to do after graduation?

TS: I would like to go to college and major in drawing.

OES: Since you love to draw, what do you think of the visual arts class at OES?

TS: It’s great! It gives me the opportunity to test my art skills. Now, I can do more than just doodle at home. I actually have a real class to help me improve.

OES: Any final thoughts?

TS: Because of Ombudsman I can now work at my own pace so I have better grades than ever. I feel really good about myself and what I am accomplishing.
