Student Finds Success at Institute for Accelerated Studies (Las Vegas)

Date: January 4, 2013

Our Institute for Accelerated Studies (IAS) MLK Center Director Sylvia DeMasi submitted the following exciting news about the success she witnessed in one of her students:

I just wanted to share this because it is a testament to what we do and why we’re here.

A student who started at MLK on the first day of school came to us needing 16.5 credits to advance to the second semester with her classmates. I told her from the beginning that she was attempting something that I had never seen done, but that I believed in her. She also needed all the proficiencies.

Well, today her teacher informed me that she is just a few enrichment courses away from completing all of her first semester courses. She will now be moving on to her second semester… with six weeks left until the end of the semester (she says that she intends to work over winter break). I am beyond proud. She also passed her math proficiency and improved by 105 points (she got a 201 last year and has now passed with a 306). Her other proficiencies weren’t too far off either.

I had to share this because it made me want to cry. I do not have a doubt in my mind that she will finish all 16.5 credits on time. We need to make a poster of this girl and hang it in the center!

Oh, and when I mentioned her proficiency score in math going up so high, her response was: “Well, Ms. Pullen is a good teacher.”
