Ombudsman Chicago Students Discover Careers in Communications (Chicago)
Students from Ombudsman Chicago’s South and West campuses recently had an opportunity to step outside of the classroom and into the boardroom to get some real-world career experience.
Flowers Communications Group (FCG), the marketing and public relations agency for Ombudsman Chicago, hosted two hands-on sessions for Ombudsman South and West students at FCG’s downtown Chicago office. The students met members of the FCG team and learned about careers paths in the marketing and communications fields.
“I thought it was really important for you to be here today, not only to see what we do, but to also introduce you to the world of integrated marketing communications,” said Michelle Flowers-Welch, FCG’s Founder and CEO, as she warmly welcomed the students. She also spoke about her passion for writing and how it led to the creation of her own company.
Students also met with various members from FCG’s account teams and got an up-close and personal look at the brands the agency has partnered with, and reviewed the extensive creative work FCG has delivered for clients over the years. While meeting with the students, FCG staff members shared stories of their educational backgrounds – where they went to college, what subjects they focused on and the most interesting projects that they’ve worked on throughout their careers.
Along with receiving an introduction to marketing, public relations and advertising, the students were able to speak directly with the communications professionals at FCG to get sound advice on the skill sets and education opportunities to help prepare them for career opportunities in marketing and communications.
As a highlight of the experience, all of the students were able to put what they learned throughout the day to work, participating in an immersive, integrated marketing communications activity to roll out a new consumer product launch in the Chicagoland area. The activity and creative presentations were evaluated by members of FCG’s account teams, who provided real-life feedback. As result of their great ideas and hard work, all Ombudsman students received gift cards to reward their participation, collaboration and creativity.
