College Bound: Sirmons Starts New Year at OTC
The start of a new year brings new challenges for several students at the Blackshear Center, with nine of the center’s 43 enrollees returning to the Pierce County School District beginning in January.
But senior Shawna Sirmons is taking a bigger leap than most. With the completion of all requirements for her PCHS diploma, Shawna is set to begin classes next month at Okefenokee Technical College (OTC) in Waycross. She is enrolling in the Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) program.
“I am extremely proud of Shawna,” says Daffany Taylor, director of the Blackshear Center. “We are going to miss her when she’s gone. We know that she will go far in the future.”
Shawna says she values her time at Ombudsman. “It allowed me to get my work done faster and allowed me to open up,” she says. “I really don’t want to leave Ombudsman because I really enjoy being here around the teachers; the teachers are just indescribable. I enjoyed my time here.”
December EOCT Test Dates
Some students will end December with EOCT (end of course testing) before the break. That testing is scheduled by subject area, as follows.
- Monday and Tuesday, December 6-7: American Literature, Biology
- Wednesday and Thursday, December 8-9: Economics, Physical Science, ninth-grade Literature
- Monday, December 13: U.S. History
Students need to be on site and ready for testing by 7:15 a.m. each morning.
No Place like Home for the Holidays
This month, students in the Pierce County School System will enjoy a break of more than two weeks that coincides with the federal holidays of Christmas and New Year’s Day.
Students will be released at the end of the day on Friday, December 17, and will return to classes on Tuesday, January 4, 2011.
We encourage all students to be safe over the break and look forward to a fresh start in the new year.
